From: Epplin John A Subject: COZY: firewall heat shield Date: Sun, 7 Mar 1999 12:56:51 -0600 I attached the fiberfrax with the recommended cement from Wicks last week. Am about ready to put the AL in place. A couple of us nuts made some samples last fall of plywood-fiberfrax-aluminum composites. We used the fiberfrax cement on one and 3M product called Fire Barrier CP 25WB+ caulk on another. The fiberfrax cement adhered to the plywood OK but it does not adhere well to the AL. The 3M product was good enough that when we separated the parts the fiberfrax failed before the adhesive. The 3M product expands significantly when heated in a propane torch flame, it does not burn at all. It does soften with acetone, however it does not seem to be affected by oil. I intend to use it to adhere the AL to the fiberfrax. Anyone have any experience with this product? THere wasn't any special adhesive back then, I used a few RTV beads to hold in place. The perimeter is caulked with polyurethane construction sealant that's oil and fuel resistant. FWIW: I believe the firewall was changed to stainless steel over the Fibrefax in the Long-EZ plans eons ago. Use stainless steel - aluminum does not provide much protection in the event of a fire.
