Date: Fri, 13 Mar 1998 22:41:09 -0600 Subject: COZY: Trailering a Cozy across country. From: resiebert@juno.com (Reid E. Siebert) I purchased a Cozy project that had the wings, canard, fuselage (on gear stuts), strakes, canopy, and turtleback roughly completed, and had no engine or engine mount. I moved it from Texas to Illinois in one day's drive, pulling it on a 16-ft. flat-bed trailer behind my Jeep Cherokee. The fuselage I sat on a pad made of several 2x4's nailed in parallel and cut to the size of the firewall. I then attached it by shipping straps to the aft end of the fuselage, and sat the fuselage upright on the trailer (it looked like the space shuttle with the span of the strakes running lengthwise on the trailer), and removed the main gear strut. The pad was high enough to prevent the strake tips from touching the ground when sitting up this way. From ground to tip of the nose cone the height (on the trailer) was 14' 0". I attached the pad to the bed of the trailer with drywall screws, wrapped the fuselage in a large tarp, and then looped a heavy duty shipping strap over each strake's leading edge root, and secured the ends on the four corners of the trailer. The wings and canard were mounted on 2x4 frames (leading edge down) on either side of the fuselage. It took me, and one occasional helper, about 2 1/2 days to get everything loaded. I drove on interstate highway all the way home, going thru Ft. Worth, Okla. City, and St. Louis. The lowest overpass I encountered was 14' 1". None of the pieces shifted by as much as one inch on the whole trip. Nothing was damaged. The only padding I took was some old carpet padding that I used to cushion the leading edges of the wings in their frames. I used a lot of 2x4 studs, drywall screws, and various sizes of adjustable shipping straps (from Wal-Mart). Hope this helps.
