Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 09:02:22 EST Subject: COZY: Aurora Rod End Bearings From: gmellen@juno.com (George J Mellen Jr.) I am in the process of installing the control system in my cozy III. Wicks did not carry the Heim part numbers HM-3 & HM-4 , So I took it upon myself to substitute Aurora part numbers MM-3 & MM-4. Nat put a nice BOLD comment in the plans that the HM-4 rod ends are an absolute requirement on the elevator push rods. Did I screw up here ,by not reading ahead ? Has anyone else used the Aurora rod ends in their aircraft ? Are they not as reliable as the Heim parts ? They look to be of decent quality. Is it possible that the Aurora rod ends were not available when Nat or Rutan wrote this section originally ? Just concerned whether or not to send the batch back and get the Heim parts from another source George Mellen gmellen@juno.com _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I think what is meant here is that you need the "-4" for the elevator, and not the "-3". I don't think that the meaning was that you had to have the HEIM. In the MKIV plans, it says: " NOTE THAT MM-4 ROD ENDS ARE USED ON ELEVATOR PUSH RODS. THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE REQUIREMENT". >Did I screw up here ,by not reading ahead ? No. >Has anyone else used the Aurora rod ends in their aircraft ? This is what is called for in the MKIV plans. It's what I've got (and what Wicks ships in the Chapter 16 kit for the MKIV). >Are they not as reliable as the Heim parts ? Doubt it sincerely. >They look to be of decent quality. That would be my guess, or maybe the Aurora's are cheaper (or more expensive :-) ). -- Marc J. There were 4 bearing looking things (can't remember their part numbers), they are steel, and have a nylon/kydex/slipprey plastic insert that is like a rod end (rotates, and twists). I have been looking all over for a reference to a change. Are these the replacement for the phenolic bearings? If they are, you gotta use AN3-5A bolts or a lotta washers and the AN3-7A bolts specified. BUT since these are hollow (tubular) sections, I would NOT deform the tubes to egg shape. Since most of these connections are near a bearing, too tight may result in a binding bearing.
