My suggestion is to get in touch with builders who are well on their way to building a composite plane and get them to show you the ropes. There is nothing like having someone demonstrating what to do. Having someone show you that you should dump a bunch of micro slurry on the foam, work it around, and then scrape off the excess very quickly will sure make an impression especially if you have tried a part or two on your own where you put some micro slurry on the part, very carefully moved it around, not quite enough, more slurry.. :) You can make good parts with the instruction given in the plans, but you can make faster progress and have more confidence sooner by watching others skilled in the art of gooping. Others have helped me and I have returned the favor for new builders. Look at the group list that Marc Z. updates or ask Nat for a recommendation for someone in your area or join a local EAA chapter that has members that are actively building. If there aren't any builders who live near you, purchase the Rutan composite building instructional video. I have done all four of these things listed and found them to be the most helpful. Good luck! Books such as Composite construction etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to the great design and plans provided by Nat, and learning opportunities such as this server provided by Mark, I hope to be airborne in a few years Thanks for the help, Rod Ogilvie Destin, Fl From: BCGARDNER@aol.com Date: Tue, 8 Dec 1998 07:45:48 EST Subject: Re: COZY: Book Recomendations Rod Ogilvie of Destin FL asked for book recommendations: Rod, Nat's plans are as good as any at explaining technique. However, if you are interested in learning more theory and background info about the wider world of composites, I'd recommend Andrew Marshall's "Composite Basics," (I believe the 4th edition is the latest), available from the EAA bookstore or from Marshall himself. My 3rd edition copy lists Marshall's address as: 720 Appaloosa Drive, Walnut Creek, CA 94596. I also have a book by Cindy Foreman entitled "Advanced Composites" (ISBN 0-89100-358-4), available from IAP (800-443-9250). In spite of its title, Marshall's book which is humbly titled "...Basics" is more advanced that this book entitled "Advanced..." Actually, the adjective "advanced" in the title refers to the composites themselves, not the level of instruction. Still, if you are looking for books, this is another one out there. Put 'em on the Christmas list. Barry Gardner From: Epplin John A Subject: RE: COZY: Book Recommendations Date: Tue, 8 Dec 1998 07:34:47 -0600 It has already been mentioned, but I think it is worth repeating. Get Burt R.'s video first! Worth more than twice the asking price. This assumes you have little or no experience in composite construction. He takes you through the building of a winglet step by step, wire cutting and all. John Epplin Mk4 #467 From: cdenk@ix.netcom.com Date: Tue, 8 Dec 1998 08:35:36 -0600 (CST) Subject: Re: COZY: Book Recomendations The issue isn't so much composite construction, but ordinary hardware, safety wiring, lots of little details when fitting things. Also make friends with the local maintenance hanger, buy a few things (engine parts, etc) even if the price is a little high. Stick you eyes everywhere on a factory built plane with the cowl and covers off, watch how things are done, ask questions. The best way to build one of these airplanes is Burt's way...what's in Chapter 3 and the video or the Burt Rutan Composit Materials Practice Kit (Aircraft Spruce page 39 - '98 cataloge) is all you need. If you get too many other opinions on how to do it, you might have an information overload. dd
