The wreckage was discovered by a farmer some 17 hrs. after the accident occurred at about 4:00 PM. Why the ELT didn't activate is anyone's guess. It was a long cold night, and somehow Owens foot was wedged in a tourniquet fashion requiring amputation. He suffered multiple broken bones and burns over 20% of his body (from fuel I believe). How or why he didn't go into shock is beyond me. He is lucky to be alive. His partner was found outside of and under the wreckage ??! The engine quit - apparently fuel starvation as Owen was able to get power spurts by pumping the primer. Owen was attempting to make a grass strip and flew it into a John Deere "combine" about 10 ft. off the ground. There is not much left of the Long EZ or the cab of combine. The airplane was based at Cloverfield, Friendswood, Texas - home of RACE 89 - Pushy Galore Gary Hunter
