The FAR's indicate it should be mounted on the exterior of the aircraft near the most aft entrance. As far as I can recall, I dont ever remember seeing any EZ's with the data plate mounted on the exterior of the plane. Rather, I seem to remember seeing them mounted on the headrest. Where have other builders mounted theirs? Where have other builders mounted theirs?" My DAR said he was satisfied as long as it was readable from the exterior of the airplane. Mine is mounted between the headrests. My advice is to confer with the inspector/DAR prior to having the actual inspection and get a reading on what will be accepted. I'm not sure I still have the reference but I will look for it. My data plate is mounted under the strake aft just in front of the cowling. hope this is some help.
