I saw the cover at Oshkosh, and quite a few Longs were using them. Start by stretching from spinner to past the nose to curl under a bit. Then start taking tucks (wedge shaped folds [mark with chalk] and then sew the line, several tucks at a time, until your happy the way it fits. Add triple thickness straps made from same material with velcro to fasten, Looping around spinner at rear, and under nose at front. Mark canopy/strake corner line, cut with 5/8" seam allowance. Lay fabric on strakes, mark canopy/strake intersection, with seam allowance, and sew the 2 together (a serger machine would be best). Finish tucking, mark and cut edges, hem edges. Finish with additional straps with velcro. Cost probably less than $30. Date: Thu, 18 Sep 1997 14:38:46 -0700 From: "LCDR James D. Besides Bruce's (advertises in the back of Sport Aviation and Kitplanes), send email to majordomo@hpwarhw.an.hp.com with the lines: get cozy_builders topics/covers.txt end in it, and you'll find a couple of other responses. Seems to me like Carl Denk's recommendation is about the cheapest, and probably just as good. -- Marc J. I have just aquired a sample cloth for UV testing purposes that may make a superior aircraft cover. The cloth is currently used in scuba diving suits, has an aluminized finish and a very soft flannel backing and is water repellant. A cover made of this stuff would weigh around 4-5 lbs, pack in a small duffle bag that would fit easily in the strakes (less than .5 cu. ft.). I delivered the samples to a lab yesterday (11/25) and it will take about a week or so to know the results. If the tests go well I'll start on a prototype for the MKIV right away. The cloth is a bit expensive (around $17 yd) but it stretches very smoothly over the Cozy canopy and would eliminate a lot of sewing and fitting headaches. I will post another note next week on the UV tests. BTW never use anything but 100% polyester thread in items exposed to the sun; nylon and anything made from it (Velcro) will deteriote within 18-24 monthes. michael.amick@nashville.com From: cdenk@ix.netcom.com Date: Mon, 1 Dec 1997 07:13:06 -0600 (CST) Subject: Re: COZY: Plane Covers (fwd) Wife and I made our cover from white lightweight nylon bought inexpensive at local fabric store. From: wilhelmson@scra.org Date: Mon, 1 Dec 1997 09:10:37 -0500 Subject: Re[2]: COZY: Plane Covers (fwd) The proven material for outside covers is a product called Herculon. It is used for boat covers. It is not light but will last outside in the sun for ten years or more. I have a cover that I used outside for ten years and it is still good. It is heavy but it will stand strong winds and any thing else. This material should have a soft lining applied were it contacts the canopy. I have a light weight cover for use away from home base. I do not have data on price and availability on this material. I purchased mine at READ & READ Co. in Charleston SC over ten years ago.
