From: Rafael Bello Subject: COZY: engine specs Date: Fri, 5 Jul 1996 16:26:49 +0200 (MET DST) Hi Cozy builders, In order to get the legal permissions to start building the Cozy, I need to give the competent authorities a general description of the plane and the technical data sheet of the engine that I am going to use. I have tried to get such engine data specs., but without effort. If someone does have the info for the O-360, IO-360 and/or Franklin, please email me the data. Thanks a lot, Rafa rafa@asterix.cps.unizar.es Date: Wed, 13 Nov 1996 12:27:06 -0500 From: Mahan Subject: Re: COZY: Engines Bill Jackson wrote: Also, there seems to be many versions of the 0-360, from a homebuilders standpoint, which versions are the most desirable? Is it better to buy a core and have it rebuilt, buy a low time engine, or buy a new engine? A low to mid-time engine is the easiest way to go, costs less money, has proven itself, and doesn't need to be broken in. I had a freshly topped (chrome) O-235L2C in my Long-EZ. This created a big worry, because of having an unproven engine in a new airplane. Freshly overhauled engines, especially chrome ones, must be ground run very little or else the rings will glaze and never seat, you'll use oil like crazy, there'll be lots of blow-by, and you'll have to top the engine. If you can't do much ground running, you can't do the passes up and down the runway to get the "feel" of your airplane. I was lucky enough to have a very experienced Long-EZ pilot, who would know right away if the airplane "felt" right, do my first flight. It turned out OK, but was a very anxiety ridden and potentially dangerous situation. The plain ol' O-360A4M out of an Archer is probably the cheapest way to go. It's already set up for low wing and fuel pump. A 180 out of a high wing might be a few pounds lighter, but it wouldn't have the fuel pump. An injected 180, the IO-360B1E out of early Arrows, only weighs 2 lb. more than the Arrow engine and has better part-throttle fuel specifics, but costs quite a bit more. If I get enough responses and enough are interested, I'll put it all together in a table and post it for all. I received the information from Weld Tech today, maker of engine mounts for the Cozy (does great work from what I have heard, not "approved" for the record). Anyways, he lists several mounts for the three and four place including conical mounts. I had pretty much excluded this group of engines in my search as I thought getting a mount made up would be a hassle. Well, maybe not... Here is what I think I know. Conical mounts are lighter, easier to install on the engine and do not require the expensive Lord rubber mounts. Then again, the dynafocal mounts are not quite as rigid and "insulate" much of the engine vibration from the rest of the plane. Having said that, anyone know of any Cozys flying with a conical mount and if so, are they happy with it?? Please feel free to fine tune my observations regarding these two options. BTW, thanks to those of you that gave me feedback on the IO-360 choice. It turned out the case had a crack at 1100 hours and since the seller was selling with no guarantees, I took a pass since there was no way to tell what damage mat be inside. Still looking, Eric Date: Mon, 23 Dec 1996 18:53:52 -0500 From: Paul Burkhardt Subject: COZY: Klauses new electronic ignition does anyone have any information on Klauses' new electronic ignition . Like how it is mounted (I'm hoping that the entire unit can be mounted in place of the mag) this would be a great benefit. Cost also.
