From: Lee Devlin Subject: Weights and Times Date: Tue, 6 Jun 95 11:01:04 MDT In the last Cozy newsletter Tom Kennedy listed the weights of his Chapter 4 parts which I found quite useful. As a first-time builder I'm really concerned about how well I'm doing and it's best to find out early if I'm getting sloppy with the epoxy. I'd be willing to collect data and put it in spreadsheet form for those of you who either send it to me or post it to the mailing list. It would be best if the weights were in decimal pounds and not as a combination of pounds and ounces. Here are my weights so far : (If you want to know yours, you'll have to do this before you start Chapter 6, BTW) F22 2.5 lbs. F28 .7 Instrument Panel 4.4 Seatback 5.6 FWD Lower L.G. Bulkhead 1.5 FWD Upper L.G. Bulkhead .9 AFT L.G. Bulkhead 2.85 Firewall sides both .7 Firewall upper 3.3 Firewall lower 2.8 Left Fuselage Side 11.2 Right Fuselage Side 11.3 Another item I'm interested in is the average amount of time each Chapter takes to complete. I have seen Marc's times as he keeps his logbook in his WWW page and my times are running pretty close to his. I generally don't add in the time I spend studying plans or cleaning up or setting up new gizmos in the shop or moving the whole shop from the basement to the garage like I did last week. I'd also be willing to make up a spreadsheet for these chapter times as well if enough of you share them. I realize that this may not be so straight forward as there may be some of us that want to machine our own AN hardware and others that are buying complete fuselage and wing kits, but that would be of interest too. Incidentally, my times were 52 hours for Chapter 4 (That's more than twice Nat's estimate.) and 47 hours for Chapter 5. I'm planning on averaging about 10 hours per week and if I can maintain that pace, I should be in the air in 5 years. Or maybe that will be 10 years if Nat's estimate 2500 hour estimate works out the same way Chapter 4 did for me. I have Nat's (and for that matter most other designer's) time estimates to be wildly optimistic. However, when I screw up a part and have to remake it, my build time for making the same part the second time is about on track with his estimate. My times are almost always double what his estimates are. Mind you, maybe I'm just slow. OTOH, when I have to rebuild a part due to a screw-up, it takes me half the time... Nat's "about three hours" to do the layup on the bottom of the tub turned out to be over ten (No sh-t!). At this rate I'll have a 6,000 hour investment in building before this thing sees sky. On the other hand, some things take just about as long as he says so maybe it won't be that bad. The first set of wings I helped build took 2 days(16 hours) , The second set on took 8 hours. These were without the winglet. I've appended my build times for chapters four through eight. Times look pretty good to me. I was afraid I was "wasting" inordinate amounts of time but it compares well to the 2-point averages you've posted. -Norm
