I have a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering and have completed the controls and am now working on the canopy of the 4-Place Cozy. I am working on a color computer screen to go on the instrument panel between the radios on one side, and the basic six flight instruments on the other. The computer screen is essentially a remote monitor from a laptop which would be mounted under the seat. I plan on using off-the-shelf software for the moving map display (Such as Mentor Graphics system), and standard prcess and control software used in chemical plants or automated building energy management systems to give me a graphical display of the engine and fuel systems. It can also tie into the head set to give verbal information when alarm condition occurs, such as "switch fuel tanks dummy", "lower your landing gear", or verbally list the take-off, emergency, or landing checklists when called upon. There are also control outputs that could be used to turn on electric fuel pump, carb heat, and other items. Laptop computer, remote active matrix color screen, and minature controllers should end up weighing less than the gauges they will replace. I also plan to have inputs for altimeter an pitot pressure to supplement the standard flight instruments. This information can be used to automatically calculate take off distances, true air speed, etc.. I flew in the Cozy IV prototype a couple of weeks ago with Ken Murphy. He was using a laptop with a moving map display. It works great! He has all of his flights stored on the computer. He can call up any of his flights and show you his flight paths at 10 second increments. The only problem is seeing the active matrix color screen in bright sunlight. The darker the canopy, the better. He wants to replace the instrument panel Nat installed, and I have offered to help. Hopefully he will take me up on it. I will keep you all informed on my progress. Thanks for organizing this group Marc. See ya, Jim White
