I previously built a Long-EZ (s/n 160) but grew to dislike the seating arangement and sold the project. I've been busy setting up shop and looking the plans over and did the first lay-ups (seat back bulkhead) last weekend, the fun really starts now! I noticed after looking over your home page that you have many components in AutoCad and ME10. I've been doing the same thing in AutoCad! Maybe we can share. After building the wings of the Long EZ I definitely want to improve the jigging of the foam cores prior to shear-web and caps. Have you done anything in getting the wing templates into 3D CAD? Hope to hear from you soon. That's why I put them out there. They're links, and you can download them. Actually, Lee Devlin (also of HP) created the 2D models. I just made them available. >..... No. I have created 3D models of the 2D parts Lee created, but I haven't done any myself. I'm in Chapter 7, so I haven't touched the wings yet. Don't know if you noticed on the web page (or if you get the cozy or Central States newsletters) but we've got an email mailing list for Cozy builders going, with 25 members so far. We use it to discuss building, flying, and anything else anyone wants to bring up in relation to Cozy's. If you're interested in joining, please let me know. I can add you and send you the particulars. If you've got any suggestions for the Web page (or any info to post on YOUR project [hint, hint, hint]) please let me know. BTW, where did you find out about the Web page? -- Marc J. Zeitlin E-Mail: marcz@an.hp.com From: Lee Devlin Subject: Template update... Date: Tue, 6 Jun 95 10:10:10 MDT I just wanted to send out a note to any of you who may have downloaded the fuselage templates that are on Marc's WWW page. I found an error in the seatback template that became apparent when I was assembling the fuselage. It's not serious, but I corrected the template and if you plan to use it, you should download the new one. Here's the entry I added to the template 'readme' file: UPDATE 6/6/95: While fitting my seatback bulkhead, I found an error. I must have screwed up a 3D operation and ended up with the wrong cutout on the top corners. The part still fits but there's approximately a 1" gap under the upper longeron. This mistake will be hidden by the headrest assembly and I've updated the newest file to fix this problem. In addition, the bottom corner cutouts specified in the plans don't really match the fuselage sides so I fixed them on this template. If you correct these corners when you make the foam you'll save the hassle of having to sand them to shape later, after they've been glassed. In addition, the angle that the seat reclines is 47.7 degrees from the upper longeron (or 42.3 degrees from vertical), in case you're interested. This slope is derived from the inverse tangent of 20"-1.06" (x distance) divided into 20.85" (y distance), which you can find in Chapter 6. You may have noticed that the seatback's lower corners required a fair amount of sanding in order to mate up properly with the lower spacers and longerons. Here's a small portion of the HPGL file plotted 1:1 that describes the new and improved seatback lower corner for those of you that have access to plotters: ---------------------------cut here------------------------------ ;IN;IM33,0 IM32,0;PU;SC-15710,15710,-10060,10060 PA0,0 SP1;LT PA-10060,-10060 IP-31420,-20120,0,0 PW .5,1;PW .1875,2;PW .375,3;PW .25,4;PW .625,5;PW .6875,6;PW .1,7;PW .80,8;SC IP-2196,-4885,2196,4885;LT SP1 LT PA2195,4883;PD;PA2195,3512 LT-3,3.734 PU;PA1433,-3229;PD;PA1433,-3922 LT-3,3.734 PU;PA722,-4190;PD;PA722,-4883 LT-3,3.734 PU;PA1367,3512;PD;PA1367,4273 LT-3,3.734 PU;PA722,-4190;PD;PA-2195,-4190 LT-3,3.734 PU;PA722,-4190;PD;PA1433,-3229 LT-3,3.734 PA2195,-71 LT-3,3.734 PU;PA2195,4273;PD;PA1367,4273 LT PU;PA1367,1698;PD;PA2195,1698;PU;PA2195,3512;PD;PA1367,3512,1367,1698;PU;PA2195,1698;PD;PA2195,-764,1433,-3922,722,-4883,-2195,-4883;PU;PA1367,2459;PD;PA2195,2459,2195,1698 PU;PA0,0 SP;SC ; ---------------------------cut here------------------------------ I have installed nearly all the bulkheads in the fuselage and they are fitting together well. With the exception of the seatback, I haven't had any other unwelcome surprises. Lee Devlin leed@gr.hp.com From: Lee Devlin Subject: CAD files on Marc's WWW page Date: Fri, 10 Nov 95 14:10:06 MST People; Roy Grossinger informed me today that several of the .dxf files for the Chapter 4 templates were not converted to the correct scale. It seems that our .dxf translator converted several of the files so that they were too small by a factor of 25.4. If you used these files and found that your seatback and landing gear bulkheads were only 1.65" across, that is why. I retrieved all of the original '.mi' (HP CAD) files and they were all correct. I then combined them together into one file, converted to .dxf, back to .mi and checked them for correct size. Now I'm sure they are all to the same scale. Marc will put them up on his WWW page. Now that they are all in one .dxf file, you can download the entire set at once and break out and save the individual bulkheads for plotting. Lee Devlin From: Marc J. Marc will put them up on his WWW page. This is done now. If you access the COZY WWW page and go to the CAD file page, you will see that there are far fewer choices, but no less information. >Now that they are all in one .dxf file, you can download the entire set at >once and break out and save the individual bulkheads for plotting. Also, I have "zip'ed" each of the template files, as well as the plot files, both to save space (and $$$) for me, and to save download time for you. If anyone has other CAD files that they'd like to make available just let me know. -- Marc J. Zeitlin Email: marcz@an.hp.com
