As usual they are trying to help us by finding some new insurers for our canard home builts. For those who are not members I would really recommend joining. They are really helpful, especially if you are flying out of the country where they will give you all the skinny on the latest procedures for flying a home built into your destination country. Many times sending the necessary paperwork right from their office. They seem to bend over backward for all their members. I have no connection with the AOPA. From ???@??? Puffer" Dear Builders, I did have a one-on-one meeting with Avemco and EAA representatives at Sun n Fun. Tom Poberezney arranged for Avemco to meet with designers to explain what has been happening and to review the claim history for each design. I will have more to say about this in the next newsletter. There was a 2-week period during which Avemco wrote no new policies while they started an in-depth review of their claims. As of now, they decided not to write hull coverage for experimentals, and their liability policies on experimentals would not cover passengers. They will advise if that changes. They said that their biggest competitor was no insurance. They agreed that people who build from plans have an advantage in that if they keep the investment low, self-insurance on hull is a viable alternative. For 24 years now we have been self-insured on hull. Over this period we have saved more than enough in premiums to pay for our Mark IV. We have our liability insurance with Falcon Agency (512) 891-8473, and it does cover passengers, but only $100,000 per seat. Falcon said they have two insurance companies who will also write hull coverage. I had lunch with Duane Swing of Velocity. They do not have insurance with Avemco. Duane said their accident rate had gone down dramatically since they strarted inspecting airplanes before the first flight and require pilot training. They have 2 CFIs who do this and charge $100 per hour. Best regards, Nat
